If a cooking fire occurs in your home, it is important to take the appropriate steps in a quick manner. If a fire starts in a pan, immediately smother it with a lid and turn off the burner. Water or a fire extinguisher can cause splattering and spreading of the fire. If there are flames in your oven, keep the door closed and turn off the heat. And, if a fire starts in your microwave, keep the door closed and unplug the appliance.

If your clothing catches fire, drop to the floor and roll around to smother the flames. Most importantly, don’t try and be a hero by fighting a fire you can’t contain. Call for help and get out of the house. Taking the proper steps can mean the difference between a happy family meal and a devastating tragedy.
